History of Cleveland Community College

Cleveland Community College’s story began on July 1, 1965, when the Cleveland Unit of Gaston College was established. Classes began that fall and included Practical Nursing, a program that still flourishes today.

Only two years later, the Unit became Cleveland County Technical Institute, a standalone entity with its own Board of Trustees. In 1969 the College moved to its current location, and by 1974 the first two buildings, now known as the B Building and Wright Occupational Complex, opened.

The College was renamed Cleveland County Technical College in 1980, and in 1987 became Cleveland Community College. That same year, the College began offering two-year college transfer programs.

An exciting milestone in the life of the College occurred with the addition of athletics in spring 2019, as the College became a member of the NJCAA, Region 10. The College currently has eSports, men’s baseball, women’s softball, men’s and women’s cross-country and track and field, men's and women's basketball, and women's volleyball teams competing.

The College continues to grow, adding facilities and programs to help its students and community thrive.
